Being the Minority

It’s sometimes really fun to live in a place where you’re the minority. In the States people will comment on how cute my kids are. But here in Costa Rica they stop you and make funny noises to your kids and go on and on about how cute they are. My kids are super cute, but they seem even cuter here because they don’t look like all the other kids.

We often get special treatment because people are eager to practice their English. Everyone wants to meet you because your different, hence making you more cool then them.

And just like the boys I’m cuter here then I am in the States. (Not many women here with blond hair and blue eyes.) The bag boys at the grocery store totally flirt with me. I’ve been asked if I’m married at least five times. I don’t think I’ve ever been asked that in the States. I think it’s more fun now that I am married…it’s hard to explain, but it makes me smile. I always go home and kiss my handsome husband, grateful for what I have. But it’s fun to know that I’ve still “got it”.
